Description of Professional Services
Project Development of approximate 500-foot-long, 10-foot-wide shared use pathway, intended for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized users. Includes design of 90-foot-long bridge spanning Whetstone Brook. Bridge aesthetics has been a critical issue given visual prominence in the area.
Urban downtown area project is intended to provide direct connection for people using new multi-modal facility located on Flat Street to Main Street and railroad depot. Project has been engineered to be compatible with several adjacent construction projects, including new bridge on US 5, new multi-model center on Flat Street and future reconstruction of intersection that includes leg into the project area.
This project has been developed by working closely with local Steering Committee and following procedures outlined in VTrans Local Transportation Facilities (LTF) Project Development Handbook. Professional services have included Project Definition Phase items (Purpose & Need, Project Scoping, Information Gathering, Public Participation), Project Design (Preliminary Design, Right of Way, Environmental Documentation, Utility Considerations, Final Design and Contract Document preparation. Services also include assistance during construction.
Project issues have included bridge, retaining wall and associated structural issues, ornamental railing, ADA compliance, drainage, creation of new landscaping areas and public viewing areas with benches, pathway lighting and fixture types to match downtown lighting standards. In addition, structural concerns of the existing concrete retaining wall along the river’s edge have required consideration, as has entrance into adjacent parking lot. Right-of-Way was significant issue as relatively large portion of private parking lot was acquired and converted to pathway.
Current project construction cost estimates are approximately $611,752 and construction is scheduled for completion in mid-September 2004. Back to Top
