USDA Forest Service White Mountain National Forest Beaver Pond Dam Design-Build

Survey and base mapping services for a design-build project to rehabilitate the Beaver Pond Dam in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The dam was in poor condition with a failing concrete spillway, seeping earth embankment, and an inoperable low-level outlet. The Forest Service required NHDES dam safety regulations be followed throughout design and construction. D&K developed design measures to minimize environmental impacts caused by construction activities, including mitigating sediment release.

The dam, surrounding embankments, and watersheds were surveyed utilizing GPS controls. Base plans were developed in state plane coordinates for design. All work was conducted in accordance with the US Forest Service Survey Standards & Specifications.

USDA Forest Service Silver Bridge Reconstruction

DuBois & King conducted planning, permitting, and engineering services for this 90-ft-long truss bridge placed on new cast-in-place concrete abutments. D&K evaluated and developed repairs to this two-span bridge, including the 90 ft main steel truss span and the 35-ft-long concrete beam approach span. Reviewed as-built plans and previous inspection records, and conducted a detailed visual inspection of the site, including bridge and roadway approaches.

The Forest Service’s initial intention was to limit repairs to repainting the steel truss and making surface repairs to the concrete abutments and pier. However, the concrete abutments and pier had significant deterioration, putting the feasibility of surface repairs into question. It was recommended to conduct an abutments investigation. D&K obtained twelve concrete cores through the abutments and the pier and performed several structural capacity tests. Results confirmed that concrete was in an advanced state of deterioration.

D&K conducted an alternatives analysis, including the construction of new abutments and rehabilitation of the pier, or elimination of the pier and construction of a single span structure, either by rehabilitation of the existing truss or by the installation of a new, pre-engineered, pre-fabricated truss bridge. The Forest Service selected a pre-fabricated steel truss bridge, with new abutments. The trusses were finished silver to match the pre-existing historic bridge.

USDA Forest Service Kiasutha Recreational Area

Inspection, evaluation, and design of improvements to the Kiasutha Recreational Area located in the Allegheny National Forest. Performed inspections of the project site to make improvements for new campsite locations, orientation, accessibility, slopes and grading, drainage, and utility connections. Services included:

Field Survey/Data Collection. Survey and inventory/base maps.

Roadway/Transportation. Design of cul-de-sacs, new parking areas, new roadway sections, replacement of culverts, new drainage ditches, and riprap ditch lining.

Campsite Improvements. Design for improvements and construction of new campsites.

New Campground Loop. Design for new campsite loop including 20 campsites.

Site Design. Design of amphitheater, two playground areas, and accessible pathways.

Facility Improvements. Water, electric, and sewer upgrade design including shower/restroom buildings, and picnic pavilions.

Water System Improvements. Design for new waterlines and replacement of existing waterlines including new valves, stops, and water system drains.

Sewer Systems. Design for new and rehabilitation of sewer lines and manholes, correct infiltration and inflow, and new hookups for campsites.

Electrical System Improvements. Upgrade and design of new electrical services and equipment, and increased capacity upgrades.

US Fish & Wildlife Service Electrical Improvements Edwin B. Forsythe & Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuges

Solar photovoltaic and back-up generator design for multiple facilities at wildlife refuges following Hurricane Sandy. At Cape May, prepared solar photovoltaic design for the headquarters building and a former US Coast Guard maintenance facility being converted into residences. Designed standby generators for the headquarters, visitor station, and two maintenance shops. At EB Forsythe, designed a photovoltaic system for the headquarters building. Also designed standby, back-up generator systems to augment existing generators at the headquarters, visitor center, and two dormitory residences. Reviewed back-up generator capacity at Supawna Meadows Refuge. Services included preparation of bidding documents and construction administration.

US Department of Labor Job Corps Center

Civil/site engineering for design and construction phase services for the Department of Labor’s 1,600,000 sf Job Corps Center. The campus is located on a steep, wooded 20-acre site and consists of two dormitories, an educational building, a cafeteria, an administration building, a welcome center, a recreational building, parking, roadways, and walkways.

Complete survey and civil/site services included permitting and design for utilities, access roadways, sidewalks, exterior lighting, retaining structures, and landscape architecture. Site design for this fast-track project was completed in 10 months. The total project cost is $34 million.

The D&K survey crew tied into existing boundary corners and conducted topographic survey to obtain 1 ft contour intervals on this 20 acre wooded parcel. Survey was developed into a 3D model base plan to assist the design team performing visual concept design and permitting.
