D&K’s William Devers, EI, engages with middle school students at VT ASCE STEM Day

At the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Day held in Burlington by American Society of Civil Engineers – Vermont Chapter (VT ASCE) on Friday, March 6, local middle school students explored real-world engineering challenges with professionals from across Vermont. D&K Staff Engineer and VT ASCE Board of Directors Member William Devers, EI, led one of the interactive stations focused on future sustainable city planning. Students worked in teams to imagine and design their own communities, tackling real-world challenges such as transportation, land use, and environmental sustainability.

The event encouraged participants to think creatively while applying real engineering principles. From innovative transit ideas to green infrastructure concepts, students proposed a range of thoughtful—and, at times, delightfully outside-the-box—solutions for how future cities could function. By engaging directly with practicing professionals in their communities, students collected insights into how STEM disciplines help address real-world challenges.
